Today on César Chávez Day, March 31st, we remember the civil rights accomplishments of a great man.

César Chávez is an example for all civil rights advocates that mountains can be moved with perseverance. The World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy began his life working in the fields at the age of 10. In the course of his 66 years, the once migrant worker proved that one man can inspire and affect change.

César Chávez became a community leader who fought against both economic and racial discrimination. He co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) which was the predecessor to United Farm Workers. His economic and civil contributions to society have created a living legacy for the advancement of education, environmentalism and civil rights.

This American icon is a perfect example of the positive impact one citizen can have with resolute ambition.

César Chávez once said, “It is possible to become discouraged about the injustice we see everywhere. But God did not promise us that the world would be humane and just. He gives us the gift of life and allows us to choose the way we will use our limited time on earth. It is an awesome opportunity.” [quote retrieved via http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/c/cesar_chavez.html]

As we celebrate his life and legacy today, I ask you, how will you use your gift of life and limited time on earth to better it for our children and future generations?
