Getty vs. Durst: Who is the Bigger Jinx?

Tragedy besets the Getty family once again. Andrew Getty, the grandson of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, was found dead inside his Los Angeles house on Tuesday.

Court records show Getty suffered from a serious medical condition that put him at “grave risk of substantial and irreparable injury or death. Andrew Getty was 47 years old.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Getty did not specify what his condition was in the documents, which were filed March 16, 2015 in support of a restraining order he sought against his on-again, off-again girlfriend.

Police say Getty’s body was surrounded by significant amounts of blood when they found him inside the bathroom of his Hollywood Hills mansion. “He had a whole plethora of medical issues,” said LAPD Capt. William Hayes. “We believe it is a natural-caused death.”

Police also say the sometime girlfriend discovered the body but there was no nexus between his death and her. What is curious about this is that law enforcement reached this conclusion so quickly, notwithstanding that Getty’s girlfriend was reportedly the subject of a temporary restraining order which required her to stay a full 100 yards away from him. A full hearing on the restraining order was scheduled for later this month.

While law enforcement appears to be pointing the public away from a criminal act, the presence of a restraining order, plus a history of dozens of law enforcement contacts concerning possible domestic violence and narcotics abuse, and the fact the victim is heir to one of the great American fortunes makes this more than just another death investigation. What is also inconsistent with this being simply an accidental death, or death from natural causes, is the presence of a “security hold” – a directive from law enforcement that the coroner’s office not publicly disclose details about the matter—has been placed on Getty’s file. Is this merely because of his high-profile status? Or is there a more robust criminal investigation that is happening?

Perhaps all we can say for sure is the investigation continues, and that fortune notwithstanding, being a member of the Getty family could be a bigger jinx than being married to Robert Durst.
